LAS VEGAS, Nevada (FOX5) – The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department says a pedestrian crossing a crosswalk suffered life-threatening injuries in a Wednesday morning crash.

According to an LVMPD report, the crash occurred around 11:07 a.m. on W. Owens Ave. east of Stocker. Evidence at the scene, witness statements and video surveillance footage showed that a 2002 Chevrolet Suburban was traveling east on Owens in the left lane toward Stocker.

Police said a pedestrian was crossing Owens in a marked south-to-north crosswalk and an RTC Para-Transit bus stopped in the right lane to let the pedestrian cross. The Chevrolet passed an RTC bus and failed to yield to a pedestrian in the crosswalk.

The accident occurred when the Chevrolet took evasive action to avoid a pedestrian, and the right side of the Chevrolet struck the pedestrian, throwing him in a southeasterly direction. The Chevrolet then crossed the median and the westbound lanes of Owens Avenue.

The Chevrolet entered a private driveway and was traveling northeast. The Chevrolet drove through a fence on private property and came to rest in an empty parking lot.

Emergency medical personnel arrived at the scene and took the pedestrian to the trauma unit of University Medical Center for injuries that were considered life-threatening. The Chevrolet driver remained at the scene of the collision and showed no signs of impairment.

The crash remains under investigation by the Las Vegas Police Department’s Collision Investigation Section.
